Then there was land... and Rock and Roll

For this first weeks build, I was tasking with creating the terrain the player and enemy would be interacting with. This task seemed simple at first, create a set of planes for the player to walk on and they couldn't just fall off of, but with the tools in UE4, the terrain tool allows you to make geographically interesting stages.

Without any real experience with Unreal's various tools prior to this week, I had to take the time to understand how to use the tool to its most basic degree. The level needed to be made, and without it, the game wouldn't have a world to build its purpose upon. This needed to be one of the very first things to be implemented into the game.

After tinkering around in the engine and using planes as a basis for a level, I ended up discovering the terrain tool, which lead to the ability to create the scenery seen above. I went through the tutorial, researched how to create materials for planes and thought of interesting ways to provide the level with obstacles and restrictions using the terrain tool. Using this tool and understanding its flexibility will help with portraying the many layers of hell the player will be going through.

Aside from creating the ash plains, I also did some research on integrating audio into the game, like background music and UI sound effects. This will help me later fill our game with life with tackling this portion early.
